The unforgettable Chanquete has been resurrected. The character that the late Antonio Ferrandis incarnated in the mythical television series 'Verano Azul' in the early eighties has returned to Nerja this Friday as a sculpture thanks to Torreño artist Francisco Martín. This afternoon the work was inaugurated on the promenade located below the Balcón de Europa, next to the beach of Calahonda, a place where several scenes of the serial were filmed. The work, made in bronze in some workshops in Madrid, was installed four years after Martín created it in resin, a design that remains in the tourist office.
Mayor Nerjeña, Rosa Arrabal (PSOE), together with the mayor of Tourism, Patricia Gutiérrez (PSOE), have come to the strategic point where the new figure of the well-known Chanquete has been placed. «We ask citizenship, that we take care of our municipality and this wonderful sculpture that honors our history, our blue summers, and that I think it will become one of the most photographed places in Nerja, which will have a positive effect«, he assured the Nerja ruler.
On his plaque, still pending to be placed definitively next to the work, one can read: «In homage to Chanquete, the old fisherman of that Blue Summer, in Nerja we want to always remember you near the sea, our sea». The author of the new sculpture made in bronze in honor of Chanquete has been Francisco Martín, who from the City Council is grateful for his great work, as well as the Municipal Operational Services, which have been responsible for its installation.
«It has been located in this space as an emblematic tourist spot, overlooking the sea of ??Calahonda beach. The nerjeños, as well as the visitors, will come down here to take the photograph that reflects their visit to Nerja ", the mayor considered. For his part, the artist recalled that the piece was created on the occasion of his first exhibition in the town, in October 2015 in the Municipal Hall of Christ Street. "After many laps, we have chosen to place it at this point, which has much symbolism, because Chanquete looks at the sea, is next to the fishing boats, and has spectacular views of the mountains," said Martin.
In the Balcony of Europe Martín already has the sculptures of the king Alfonso XII, that was installed in February of 2003, and the one of the homage to the discoverers of the Cave of Nerja, inaugurated in 2009. In other points of the region of the Axarquía Francisco Martín also has numerous works such as 'El Marengo' in El Morche, 'El Miguero' in Torrox, 'El niño espetero' in Mezquitilla or a dog urinating on the Paseo de Larios in Torre del Mar, among many others.
