Salsa Patrimonio, a subsidiary of Grupo Sociedad Azucarera Larios, will invest more than 15 million euros in the upgrade and improvement project of the El Ingenio shopping center, located in Vélez-Málaga, in order to make it more sustainable, more accessible, more secure, more technological and with more services. With this initiative Salsa aspires to consolidate El Ingenio as a reference commercial and leisure destination in the province of Malaga, more competitive, modern and adapted to the future.
The update of El Ingenio is due to the need to face new market challenges, with new competitors and different consumption habits, mainly due to the rise of electronic commerce and new technologies, according to Salsa in a statement.
Since its inauguration in 2000, El Ingenio has become a reference in the Eastern Costa del Sol, contributing to the economic and social development of the region. In fact, El Ingenio is the main employment generator in the area, with more than 700 direct and 500 indirect jobs. The shopping center captures 50% of its customers from outside the municipality of Vélez-Málaga and 20% of foreign customers, so it transcends its own local framework.
The remodeling of El Ingenio seeks to make it more sustainable, adapting its facilities to achieve more efficient energy and water consumption; renewing gardening with native species that reduce water consumption and installing charging points for electric vehicles; more accessible, improving vertical communications, with more and better parking spaces for people with reduced mobility, new parking spaces for families, new signage and an adapted information point; safer, improving fire prevention, surveillance and evacuation systems; with more services, expanding and improving the facilities for the smallest of the family with new playgrounds and a unique outdoor playground; a new and

It is a comprehensive reform of a shopping center that records the visit per year of almost nine million people.
Last October the plenary session of the City Council of Vélez carried out the initial approval of the modification of the PGOU that will allow the El Ingenio shopping center to be expanded by 4,680 square meters. This plenary agreement starts the process to obtain its final approval. The Ingenio has 42,201 square meters of surface and more than 120 stores, a hypermarket, 12 movie theaters, 2,600 parking spaces, gym and gas station. The expansion project involves increasing its surface area by 4,680 square meters, occupying an area located next to the service station, and at the opposite end, where a disco was located.
