They organize a poster contest to honor the Real Feria de Vélez-Málaga, which will not be held due to the pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic has erased all kinds of events, parties, fairs, celebrations and mass events from the calendar. However, despite the restrictions and the fact that there will be no Real Feria de San Miguel in Vélez-Málaga, the Association of Friends of San Sebastián, patron of the capital of the Axarquia, has called for this unfortunate 2020 a contest for the realization of the poster of the Royal Fair of San Miguel "to avoid that this edition, for health reasons, is left blank", they have stated in a statement.

The existence of this association has its germ, precisely, thanks to Saint Michael. "It was in 2015 and thanks to a political blunder of leaving September 29 without a fair, when the first seeds of the Association of Friends of San Sebastián were put," they explained from the group, while pointing out that the media , different local companies and the citizen movement 'Vive Vélez' ?while they organized their own fair that September 29, 2015 they did not know that they would end up giving birth to the Friends of San Sebastián Association?, they have added.

For this reason, they have decided to call this contest, which will have a single prize of 100 euros. The winner will be announced on September 29, the day of San Miguel. "The current conditions make the presentation of the works a virtual form, through the Facebook group 'Amigos de San Sebastián' and only those finalist posters will be required from their authors for their study and subsequent failure of the contest", they have pointed out . The bases can be consulted on social networks. The deadline for submitting the works ends on September 24.

The group 'Amigos de San Sebastián', living force of the association that bears its historical name, intends to relaunch the figure of the patron saint of Vélez-Málaga, whose festivity is due to the equerry Sebastián Sánchez 'El Pelao', who saved the king's life Fernando, during the conquest of the city in April 1487, by placing his body in front of it when he was about to be lanced, a scene that constitutes the motif of the Vélez-Málaga shield. "Vélez is a town that allows itself the luxury of having the hermitage of San Sebastián as a historic block and as an artistic stable," says Veleño historian Francisco del Pino.
