The neighbors of Torre del Mar are in luck. After almost two years of work, the new library is already open, located in what used to be an old bingo. The facilities, with 400 square meters, have involved an investment of 340,000 euros, financed by the City of Vélez-Málaga. In the putting into operation of the enclosure, located in the central Duque de Ahumada street, the figure of the poet and writer Manuel Alcántara, who passed away last April 17 at the age of 91, had a very prominent role yesterday.
Thus, the mayor of the capital of the Axarquía, Antonio Moreno Ferrer (PSOE), and the deputy mayor of Torre del Mar, Jesús Pérez Atencia (GIPMTM), attended the reading of several poems in homage to the recently disappeared Manuel Alcántara in the facilities of the new library of Torre del Mar, located in the heart of the Torreño nucleus.
The poems were selected from the book 'Este verano en Málaga', a work that represents part of the general theme of Alcántara, as highlighted by the Consistory of Vélez-Málaga in a statement. Specifically, it is a poetry book that also has its presence, for more than a decade, on the seafront of Torre del Mar, dedicated to the poet from Malaga. The reading also included some verses by the illustrious María thinker María Zambrano.
This space, which is already open to the public as a study room, was attended by the axarquic poet José Marcelo and also by the journalist Víctor Martín. Of both was the responsibility of conducting the reading of poems in memory of Manuel Alcántara with winks to the local philosopher María Zambrano. In the coming weeks the site will be equipped with diverse bibliographic material to also open as a library.
Atencia explained that, for now, the old library, located on the avenue of Andalusia, next to the taxi stand, will remain open for this purpose, so that Torre del Mar already has two spaces for study and reading.
Moreno Ferrer expressed his satisfaction "for being able to carry out our humble homage to the great figure that the journalist and writer from Malaga, very close to our city, and even more so in this modern building, dedicated not only to educational activities but also to culture. , training and coexistence, available to all citizens ».
During the ceremony, the deputy mayor of Torre del Mar, Jesús Pérez Atencia, spoke of the "relevance of Manuel Alcántara for Torre del Mar, his connection and also of the feeling that the poet professed towards our land." Atencia said that "the reading of poems has been carried out in an incomparable setting, the new library of Torre del Mar, which hosts this first recital in homage to one of the most important authors of our country."
The works of the second library of Torre del Mar started in the summer of 2017, on an area of ??404.2 square meters. A modified one was approved a year ago, which entailed an extra cost of about 60,000 euros, due to some problems in the structure of the building. The works have been executed by the company EJOC 2004 S.L., with a final cost of 340,000 euros.
